Compute Services Engineer (IT-CD-CC)

As a Compute Services Engineer in the Compute and Devices (CD) group, your main activities will be to:

  • Administer, troubleshoot and ensure the evolution of the Puppet-based Configuration Management Service
  • Maintain, improve and ensure the testing of the core configuration of CERN's 15k Puppet managed servers
  • Define the Configuration Management part of the evolving Linux strategy
  • As part of the wider Compute and Configuration section:
    • participate in the ongoing service automation, monitoring and scaling activities for the scientific computing and interactive services.
    • Work on the scientific computing evolution strategy which aims to re-architect and co-develop a set of supportable solutions for the future
  • Provide technical expertise and consulting to users of the section's services

We are looking for someone with the following demonstrated experience/skills:

  • Operating and optimizing large-scale, mission-critical production services.
  • Knowledge of systems administration, in particular Linux environments.
  • Knowledge of Puppet configuration management tools and monitoring of distributed systems.
  • Programming techniques and languages, in particular Python or Go programming.
  • Dealing with user relations, user support, and user requirements definition.
  • Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies and DevOps practices.

Additional experience/skills in the following areas would be an asset:

  • Technical and troubleshooting skills with relational databases running on PostgreSQL and/or MySQL.
