Platforms and Workflows

The Platforms and Workflows group provides tools and services for all CERN and HEP user communities in the following areas:

  • Identity and access management services, authorisation, and computing resources management;
  • Platforms supporting software development and project management workflows such as version control, CI/CD, AI coding assistants, issue tracking, planning;
  • Services for content authoring and web hosting, including documentation solutions and content management systems;
  • Platforms for general purpose, business and engineering applications hosting.

Applications Hosting (IT-PW-AH)

Section Leader: Artur Wiecek

The Applications Hosting section provides: Platforms for deployment, hosting and operation of applications and third-party tools (OpenShift); Hosting for third party business-critical applications in the area of finance, payroll, HR and logistics, helping with the integration of these systems in the CERN environment; Kubernetes based service (Jeedy), used mainly for the deployment of CERN developed Java applications; It is a complete solution built to support specific requirements of developers in FAP and EN. It hosts applications like EDH or EDMS.

Identity and Access Management (IT-PW-IAM)

Section Leader: Hannah Short

Identity and Access Management provides:

  • Centralised authentication and authorisation (CERN Single Sign-On) for web applications, accessible to CERN account holders as well as federated and external users. Applications may be hosted locally at CERN, at partner organisations or in the cloud;
  • Experiment authentication and authorisation infrastructure services (WLCG IAM) for membership management and token based access to distributed computing;
  • Users grouping functionalities for authorisation and mailing (Group Management System);
  • Lifecycle management for computing resources, including computing accounts, applications and groups;
  • Digital certificates management (CERN Certification Authorities)

Web, DevOps and Authoring (IT-PW-WDA)

Section Leader: Sebastian Lopienski

The Web, DevOps and Authoring section provides: services for web hosting and analytics; content management systems (Drupal, WordPress); authoring and online collaboration tools (Google Workspace, Confluence, SharePoint, TWiki, CodiMD, Overleaf, Discourse); platforms supporting software development, source code management, devops and project management workflows (GitLab, GitLab Runners for CI/CD pipelines, AI coding assistants, Sentry, Jira); as well as Search as a Service for information access for large applications (Indico, EDMS).
